Moth Survey 1976-2016
Eyed Hawkmoth
Smerinthus ocellata - Wingspan f 75mm
Found in late spring and summer, often after emergence on the bark of a suitable host tree, or after flying to light - in Orpington, North and South Bromley and any areas where there is a preponderance of the sallow, balsam poplar, or apple tree. All records are from Orpington and St Mary Cray.
Habit: flies swiftly, often to light, sedantry during the day.
Single brooded: Overwinters as a pupa in soft soil around the tree base. Bright green larvae often found wandering on or around host tree in search of a suitable place to burrow down as late as September. Can be bred indoors from eggs.
Larval foodplant: sallow, apple, balsam poplar and other related species of tree.
Status: not under threat, but less common than formerly
